Curriculum Vitae

I was born in 1968 in Hamburg, Germany, where I also went to school and served out my basic military service. Between 1988 and 1995 I studied computer science at University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and finished with a Diploma (approx. M.Sc.).

In parallel to studying, I joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS-A) in 1992, where I worked on developing algorithms for computer tomography systems and writing software for video coding schemes and communication software for Digital Signal Processors.

In 1996 I started working on developing tools to manage and protect content related intellectual property rights. As part of that I became one of the main developers of Fraunhofer’s Multimedia Protection Protocol (MMP) and several patents related to this work bear my name. Between 1998 and 1999 I also worked as Business Relations Manager for the Audio & Multimedia departments at Fraunhofer IIS-A. Between 1999 and 2001 I worked for InterTrust Technologies International as Manager, Standards and Multimedia.

Since 1997, I have been, with short interruptions, chairing various task groups on Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/ WG11 (MPEG). I was awarded several “ISO/IEC Certificates of Appreciation” for my work.

Between 1998 and 2000 I was also secretary of the Audio Engineering Society’s standards committee AESSC SC-06-04 on Internet Music Delivery Systems and between March 1999 and May 2000 I had the pleasure to chair the Functional Requirements Working Group of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI). I am a regular speaker at conferences on Digital Rights Management and have published several papers on the topic. I also co-edited the “first consolidated book on DRM” published by Springer Verlag. I am a visiting lecturer at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.

In 2001 I have joined Rightscom Ltd. where I have concentrated on the technical aspects of DRM applications and technologies, mainly the communication of rights metadata between business partners. I have also advised clients in technology assessments including fingerprinting and watermarking applications, optimisation of workflow processes and the development of architectures for the processing of rights information.

I am also involved in the development of metadata and messaging systems within DDEX as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and was an active contributor to the standardisation of ISRC, GRid and MWLI.

I am married with a child and am living in Bromley, Kent.
